No doubt, if you’re using the majority of these appliances for extended periods of time, costs will add up! But, not to worry, you can reduce your energy use daily just by changing a few simple steps.

Try to avoid leaving your appliances on standby or switched on when they’re not in use.

You may also save some money by ensuring you use the right size appliance for your needs.
Investing in smart appliances could also help you save on energy, as older appliances often use much more energy due to their lower efficiency rating.

Another tip – a mistake we’ve all be partial to make due to being in a rush or busy, make sure cooked food is cooled down before you put it in the fridge-freezer and don’t leave the doors open for long periods of time, close them properly and check the seals are working as they should.

On that note, try to keep your fridge-freezer out of the way of heat sources (like sunlight, your oven or radiators) and allow room for good ventilation by leaving gaps (5-10cm) between the sides, back and top.

Finally, changing your daily habits, like covering pots and pans with a lid, will also help you use less energy and save some cash in the long run.

Citizens Advice also has a handy calculator which helps you work out how much money your appliances are costing you.
