Operation to make roads safer by tackling uninsured drivers

The nightmare scenario of being left injured and uncompensated by an uninsured driver is being addressed with a scheme which sees the police working with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).

The MIB explain that Operation Tutelage was launched in in January 2020 to encourage uninsured motorists to drive with valid insurance.

The National Roads Policing Operations, Intelligence and Investigation (NRPOII) use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology along with data from the MIB’s database.
Drivers who appear to be uninsured are automatically sent a letter advising them to correct their insurance status.

This allows police forces to focus on targeting dangerous repeat offenders who would otherwise continue to drive without valid insurance.

So far over 215,000 Op Tutelage Advisory Letters have been issued and 151,464 drivers suspected of driving without insurance took action to insure their vehicle.

All 45 UK police forces have now joined the operation and more than 10,000 suspected uninsured drivers corrected their insurance status in August 2021 alone.

A spokesperson for the MIB said: “Our work is far from over. But we would like to thank the many people and organisations who continue to support Operation Tutelage and MIB.

“Through the way we work together and share information, we have reached an important milestone in our mission to create a world where no one has to suffer the life-changing consequences of an uninsured driver.”

The MIB was established in 1946 to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists.

It aims to reduce the level and impact of uninsured driving in the UK, compensate victims fairly and promptly and to provide first class data and specialist claims services

Every insurer that underwrites compulsory motor insurance is obliged to join MIB and contribute to its funding by law.

If you’ve been injured or your property has been damaged because of an uninsured or ‘hit and run’ driver, you may be able to claim compensation from the MIB.
